American Lauren Davis has claimed a second WTA title six years after her first, beating Italian rookie Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the Hobart International final.

The 29-year-old, who came through qualifying, outlasted her younger and higher-ranked opponent 7-6 (7-0) 6-2 on Saturday afternoon.

World No.84 Davis upset fourth seed and 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens in the first round and didn't drop a set all week.

It is her first WTA title since winning the Auckland event in 2017.

"We put in a lot of hard work over the off season, and ... over the past several years. To see the fruition of our hard work paying off is a really good feeling," she said.

Davis saved multiple break points and set points in the first set, before running through the tiebreak to love in scorching conditions.

She kept the momentum going in the second set, breaking in the second game.

Davis has drawn world No.54 Danka Kovinic in round one of the Australian Open, which begins on Monday.

"(The win) gives me a tonne of confidence," Davis said.

"I did a really good job of staying disciplined throughout the tournament. Going into next week I honestly feel pretty fresh, I don't feel too tired at all."

Cocciaretto will set her sights on a round-one Australian Open match-up with reigning Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.

The world No.67 was taking part in her maiden WTA final after an impressive run featuring wins over third seed Alize Cornet and 2020 Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin in the semi-final.

The 21-year-old played the match with strapping on her left thigh, but was adamant it wouldn't keep her from competing at the first grand slam of the year.

"When I was moving a little bit I had pain for sure, but I didn't lose (because of) this," she said.

"I didn't play my best ... but I will keep this experience for my journey. I'm at the beginning."
