Move to midfield reaps reward for Wanderer

Tim Fitzgerald was a big winner at the Katanning Wanderers wind-up, dinner and medal count on Friday past.

Fitzgerald, who was moved from the forward line to the midfield this year, polled 99 votes to win the Ken Robertson Memorial Trophy in front of a big crowd.

He outscored captain and previous winner Travis Justins (78 votes), Tyler Caldwell, who was injured after round 8 but polled a respectable 43 votes, while Josh Bellve finished with 38 votes.

Budding 16-year-old Kade Stewart, who only played in the last five games, polled 33 votes to win the best first year player.

In the reserves grade, midfielder Peter Kowald won his second Bill McLeod Memorial Trophy with 84 votes from first-year player Mitch Martin with 53 votes.

Wingmen Todd Riley and Zac Hatfield finished with 44 and 41 votes respectively, while veteran defender Paul Keley tallied 39 votes.

Riley Johnston won the colts Quartermaine Shield in a close contest with 78 votes. He outscored midfielder Boyd Woods with 71 votes, Ronald Weazel with 49 votes, Caleb Gill (44 votes) and Alan Ford (39 votes).

Vice-president Brenton Stewart and his wife Anne Maree were joint winners of the best club person award for their work with the new electronic scoreboard and the running of the canteen respectively.
