West Coast are going to give star Elliot Yeo until the 11th hour to decide if he wants to play against Hawthorn at Optus Stadium on Sunday as he deals with the passing of his father.

Yeo’s dad Craig died on Monday night but the dual John Worsfold medallist has been named in the 26-man squad to tackle the Hawks.

The Eagles have welcomed back No.1 draftee Harley Reid as well as reigning club champion Tim Kelly, while veteran wingman Andrew Gaff has also been included in the extended squad giving the Eagles plenty of cover if Yeo does pull out.

Eagles coach Adam Simpson said they’d make a decision around Yeo later in the week as to whether he will suit up against Hawthorn.

“We’re still working through that. Tragically it’s not the first time we’ve had to deal with a player losing a parent and everyone reacts differently,” Simpson told Wide World of Sports.

“So we’ve given Elliot a heap of space to work through what is a really tough time for his family.

“We’re just here to support him, so we’ll make a decision later in the week about how he’s going but it’s sort of a day-to-day thing at the moment.

“We’ve named him in the team and we’ll see how he feels in a couple of days, bearing it’s been a really difficult week for him.”

The Eagles come up against one of the form sides of the AFL in the Hawks, who have won seven of their past nine games to shoot into top-eight contention after losing their first five.

“The last seven weeks they’d sit top two of the ladder. They’ve had some good wins, they beat Brisbane a few weeks ago and I went saw the Richmond game over the bye weekend,” Simpson said.

“Their numbers are healthy and their metrics are all really good that we value.

“It’s definitely a different team than the first five rounds, so we’re really clear about what we need to do and how good they’ve been going. It’s going to be a real challenge for us.”

West Coast will be without speedster Jack Petruccelle who injured his hamstring at the Eagles’ main session on Thursday.

It comes after he was part of a crucial rotation in the midfield with Liam Ryan and Tyler Brockman in the loss to Essendon that added speed to their engine room.

“It’s very minor ... in the warm up he didn’t feel great,” Simpson said.

“We’ll miss him because he was part of that combination we had last week that brought a bit more speed into our midfield and we really liked the look of that. He’ll have a couple of weeks off, it’s disappointing.”
